9th Annual Oenology Contest
On Friday, June 20, 2003 a panel of eight amateur judges spent the afternoon tasting the 99 entries in Baxter's Vineyards Home Winemakers Contest. Thirty-six people entered their wines in this event. Some from as far away as Bothell, Washington. The wines were classified as Red Grape, White Grape, Pink Grape, Fruit, Berry, Blend and Other. The public was invited on Saturday, June 21, 2003 to sample the 99 entries. Many visitors sampled the wines and enjoyed a wonderful lunch and a slice of Carol's homemade pie.
The following are the winners in our 9th Annual Amateur Oenology Contest:
Red Grape
1st place - Glenn Wagner from Donnellson, IA ~ Concord 2nd place - Ralph Pezley from Nauvoo, IL - Concord 3rd place - Jean Hogan from Virden, IL - Concord
White Grape
1st place - Dr. Robert Reich from Quincy, IL - Niagara 2nd place - Ed Dufek from Peoria, IL - Niagara 3rd place - Charles Wolf from Jiliet, IL - Niagara
Pink Grape
1st place - Fred Baxter from Nauvoo, IL - Catawba 2nd place - Andy Camp from Niota, IL - Catawba 3rd place - Jack Simon from Quincy, IL - Catawba
Fruit
1st place - Wayne Ebelherr from Lincoln, IL - Cherry 2nd place - Charles Wolf from Joliet, IL - Plum 3rd place - Dale Pezley from Nauvoo, IL - Apple

1st place - Keith & Debra Gillespie from Omaha, NE - Rhubarb/Burgundy mix 2nd place - Darrell Fields from Henderson, IL - Concord/Raisin 3rd place - Teresa Ard from Danville, IL - Tomato
The judges re-sampled all of the first place winners in each class to choose the Best of Show. Fred Baxter won Best of Show with his Niagara/French Hybrid blend. He wins ten gallons of juice and two Baxter Vineyards t-shirts.
